The death of Mahsa Amini and ongoing protests across Iran

International issues The Swedish Trade Union Confederation is deeply concerned by the death of Mahsa Amini after she suffered injuries while in police custody. The Iranian regime must respect and ensure the fundamental rights of Iran’s citizens and that those who are under any form of detention are not subject to violence and mistreatment.

We stand together with all who are mourning Mahsa Amini, and we expect the case to be dealt with by an independent inquiry and that the perpetrators will be held accountable. We also give our support to the brave women in Iran who are protesting against a 43-year-old law concerning how they should be wearing their clothes.

Furthermore, we are equally deeply concerned about the reports of violence used by the Iranian authorities and the resulting deaths in relation to the widespread protests across Iran. The Swedish Trade Union Confederation is strongly critical to the methods used by the Iranian regime in dealing with the protests. It is especially alarming that reports show that the security forces are using live ammunition.

The current protests clearly show that the Iranian people do not accept the repressive situation of women in the country any more. It is time for change. The women of Iran should be heard. The Swedish Trade Union Confederation demands that the Iranian regime should urgently address the issues of protesting people and promptly comply with the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Yours sincerely,

The Swedish Trade Union Confederation – LO
